Howarth debut for Southampton Saints

This weekend saw Sammy Howarths debut for Southampton Saints. Formerly Liverpool, Tranmere Rovers, Doncaster Belles and England centre back, Sammy gained five England caps and won her first cap in 1992 v Denmark (away). Sammy relocated to Basingstoke with her job from Manchester and now lives with her husband in Chineham in Hampshire. She signed for Saints in October 2003.

Saints manager Sue Lopez: “Sammy showed against Enfield on Sunday that her experience and skill will make our defensive unit much more secure and confident. The team is very young, and Sammy is the ideal person to organize the defence and set a good example to all the youngsters. I was pleased with the team on Sunday, but we still need to improve in a few areas, notably defensively in midfield and our counter attacking play. I have to remember Rome wasn’t built in a day, but we need to learn quickly, as we only have seven league games left to secure promotion. Its roll up sleeves time, and show whether we have the will and character to finish off the job by winning that one promotion spot!”

Teams: Southampton Saints, Liverpool, Tranmere Rovers, Doncaster Rovers Belles, England Women
