Dundalk City WFC have enjoyed much success
The history of Dundalk City WFC traces back to 1988 under the banner of Castletown Celtic Girls FC. Their first manager was Niall Gallagher who is currently Chairman of the club.
The Club were represented in the Dundalk League in various age groups over a period of seven years (1988-1994). During this time many awards were achieved including one of the most memorable awards in 1992- the Credit Union Community games, runners-up.
A number of other awards were collected including league and cup winners in all age groups from U12 to U18.
The club then sought a new challenge and, in 1996, affiliated to the North Eastern League (NEL).
They remained in this league for four years (1995-1998) and they were extremely successful in winning many awards in all age groups.
During this period a number of players represented the club both in the NEL, U16 and U18 Irish teams.
The Club then competed in the U18 Maurice Quinn Memorial Cup in 1998 and were glorious champions.
They moved on again to the Dublin Women’s Soccer League in 1999 and they are currently competing at that level.
Under the successful joint management of Niall Gallagher and Noel Curtis Dundalk finished third in the senior intermediate League in 1999.
With the expansion of Dundalk town itself , the club decided to rename itself Dundalk City Ladies FC.
The team developed with confidence and went on to successfully win the DWSL Intermediate League. They also had the honour of being the DWSL senior Intermediate A League Cup winners making them Double Champions in 2000.
The senior team now competes in the DWSL Premier division in the Senior section, the most competitive League in the Country and finished joint runners-up this season.
The highlight of 2003 was winning the DWSL senior cup (Pat Breheny Memorial) for the first time, in a thrilling final against St. James Gate, winning 3-2 after extra time.
The highlight of 2004 was reaching the final of the WFAI Cup at Lansdowne Road
The senior team has now reached the final of the WFAI Cup for the second year in succession, in what should be a very even contest against Peamount Utd.
The team’s progress has been acknowledged by the Irish Team’s Management with a number of players selected at U17, U19 and Senior level.
The future of the club looks extremely bright, with a number of talented players emerging from the underage structures.
