Second Half Goal-Fest as York City Triumph

York City Ladies kicked off their new league season with a 6-3 victory away at AFC Preston.

A sluggish first half by City saw them 3-1 down at half time. Only a good run and finish by Charlie Woodward kept City in the game.

The second half started much the same as the first had ended until a tactical change by manager Steve Thornton which saw wingers Emma Fawcett and Tina Reeve replace Louise Ross and Jo Spence. Striker Jenny Garnetts' shot somehow managed to escape the Preston Keeper and suddenly City had a new lease of life. City's equaliser came from Kelly Chesterton marking her return to the team with a stunning volley. City's pressure started to pay off when Garnett added another and it looked as if the floodgates would open with 15 minutes left on the clock, but the Preston keeper made some good saves to keep the scoreline respectable. The Ladies finished off the job with Garnett getting her hat-trick and Woodward her second of the game.

Lauren Coombs was named Player of the Match.

City will be hoping to make up for this disappointing perfomance when they entertain Morley Spurs next weekend.
