Seven-Up for Rampant Reserves

YORKSHIRE & HUMBERSIDE LEAGUE - DIVISION 1 EAST
SUNDAY 9TH NOVEMBER 2003

York City LFC Reserves 7
Dearne Valley 0
(Jackson 3, Whelan 2, Gardiner, Boyes)

York City LFC Reserves put on a real footballing display to earn a great 7-0 win over bottom team Dearne Valley. Things started well for City when a mistake by the Dearne keeper gave skipper Kate Jackson opportunity from a free kick for a passback within the first minute. Nic Whelan touched the ball to Jackson who slammed it past the wall into the net.

Jackson got her second ten minutes later, the Dearne keeper could only parry Nic Whelans powerful shot and Jackson struck home the rebound. York then made it three, Tine Bordevich Ballo returned a throw in to Player of the Match Jo Gardiner whose cross-shot swerved over the keepers outstreched arm.

City were winning the majority of the midfield battles, but Dearne managed a couple of attempts which were easily dealt with by City keeper Laura Fortune. Dearne's keeper then kept her side in the game with some fantastic saves, Bordevich Ballo's volley was tipped over before striker Nat Taylor's shot was pushed wide after a great run.

Another long range Gardiner effort sailed wide before captain Kate Jackson got her hat-trick , Dearne failed to clear Whelan's inswinging corner and Jackson was on hand at the back post to net her sixth of the season.

Dearne came out with more purpose in the second half but City dealt with everything they threw. York were passing well and utilising full backs Kim Armstrong and Anne Begley to provide danger down both flanks.

Ten minutes into the second period Nic Whelan struck a pinpoint free kick from 20 yards to make it 5-0.

City were now attacking in waves and Jackson struck just wide after a great move down the left. Whelan saw another shot well saved before grabbing her second with a well-struck effort from the edge of the penalty area.

Young substitute Sarah Boyes completed the scoring, Whelan's mazy run and centre setting up Boyes who made no mistake with a clinical finish for her first City goal.

An excellent team display and pleasing clean sheet leaves City 8 points off the top two and just 3 points off next week's visitors Scunthorpe Reserves, who lost 2-1 at Doncaster PR Reserves.
