Stoney to Captain Women's Team

Casey Stoney says her "feet have not touched the floor" since finding out she would captain Team GB at this summer's Olympics.

The 30-year-old Lincoln defender has been selected as the Great Britain women's team captain for London 2012.

Stoney, who also captains the England team, is delighted to be appointed skipper by manager Hope Powell and cannot wait for the Games to begin.

"It is a fantastic day being here, getting kitted out and being announced as captain," she told Press Association Sport on Sunday.

"My feet have not touched the floor yet.

"It's a massive honour, huge privilege and I am really thankful that Hope has trusted me with that position.

Stoney will lead her teammates out in a friendly against Sweden on July 20, before they face New Zealand, Cameroon and Brazil at the Games.

"Casey Stoney will be my captain," she said.

"Basically she is somebody I know first and foremost. Obviously she is a good leader and leads by example.

"She is known to the squad and her conduct over the last few years makes her an ideal candidate for the captain.

"In terms of squad selection, it was a tough order. I think we have the right blend in terms of balance, experience and obviously international exposure. We will do our level best.

"We have three tough group games and will have to try really well to get out of that group and then go from there.

"Obviously we need a bit of luck and hopefully we will stay injury-free and hopefully we will progress a
