Euro 2005: NorwayArticle ID: 3597 Reporter: femaleSOCCER.net - Chris Brady
|
|---|
Following their qualification for Euro 2005, Norway replaced manager Åge Steen and brought in Bjarne Berntsen, previously an assistant coach for the country’s male national team.
Norway has a glittering history in women’s international football. At the Olympic Games of 2000 in Sydney, Australia, they claimed the gold medal, beating both America and Germany in the process. In 1995 they became the first European side to win the World Cup and they have twice been crowned European Champions, whilst also being runners-up on two occasions in the past.
Taking into account Norway’s pedigree at this level, it is some what mystifying that they required a play-off match against Iceland to guarantee their place at this year’s event, but perhaps less of a surprise was their 9-3 aggregate victory.
It seems new boss Bjarne Berntsen is keen to put his own mark on the team, having named five new players for a recent training camp in La Manga, none of which have played at senior international level, including former Under 19’s captain Guro Knusten.Star PlayersNorway have a top goalkeeper in Bente Nordby and she is likely to be the scourge of many a centre forward at Euro 2005. Striker Solveig Gulbrandsen will be expected to deliver the goals to ensure success.euro2005.net predictionNorway have an illustrious history and have shown with recent friendly victories over Germany and Sweden that they have the potential to beat the best at this summer’s tournament.
